Firefighters on the scene of a major blaze at a landfill in Welland are making progress.
Acting Fire Chief Matt Richardson says fire crews have made significant headway at the Humberstone Landfill fire, and it is now considered under control.
He says crews are transitioning to overhaul operations, working carefully through the area to ensure all remaining hot spots are fully extinguished.
The shelter-in-place advisory has been lifted.
“The main pile has been knocked down and extinguished, and our crews did an outstanding job preventing the fire from spreading to the nearby wood chip pile.”
The majority of crews and equipment have now cleared the scene, with remaining personnel continuing cleanup and monitoring efforts.
The fire broke out at 6 p.m. Monday sending heavy black smoke into the air.
More than one-million gallons of water have been used in firefighting efforts so far.
