Canadians will be flying the flag today along highway overpasses in honour of a young, Hamilton-born solider, who died while serving in Latvia.
The flag-draped casket of 24-year-old Gunner Sebastian Halmagean landed at CFB Trenton at 2:45 p.m. today.
A special ceremony was then held, including 60 members of his Royal Canadian Artillery regiment from CFB Gagetown, New Brunswick, and his family members.
Following the ceremony, the motorcade will travel to Toronto on the 401, also called the Highway of Heroes.
Residents, including organizations supporting fallen military members and their families, will be on Toronto’s Avenue Road bridge to welcome the arrival of Halmagean’s body at about 5 this afternoon.
The motorcade will leave Trenton and then travel down the highway to the coroner’s office near Highway 401 and Keele Street.
Residents in communities along the route often stand on the overpasses with flags to honour fallen Canadian soldiers.
The investigation into Halmagean’s death continues.
