St. Catharines NDP MPP Jennie Stevens is demanding to know how much the twinning of the Garden City Skyway Bridge will cost, and that it’s built with Ontario steel.
Stevens is demanding the Ford government guarantee that Ontario workers and materials will be prioritized in the upcoming construction.
“Our province’s skilled trades are ready to work, and our steel industry is second to none. Will the Premier guarantee, right here, right now, that public dollars will go toward local steel, local materials, and local workers in the construction of the Garden City Skyway Twinning project? Or will he admit he’d rather sell out Ontario jobs to the lowest bidder?”
Stevens said that major public infrastructure projects like the Garden City Skyway Twinning must support Ontario’s local economy, not line the pockets of out-of-province contractors or multinational corporations.
Construction on the bridge that connects St. Catharines and Niagara-on-the-Lake, over the Welland Canal, is tentatively targeted for next year.
