A crisp morning in Niagara as residents gathered to honour military members past and present.
Remembrance Day ceremonies were held all across the Region, including at the St.Catharines Cenotaph.
St. Catharines Mayor Mat Siscoe spoke to the crowd about the importance of Remembrance Day, and to respect current military members who put themselves at risk for other’s safety.
“In the coming months, members of our own Lincoln and Welland Regiment, will once again deploy to Europe, supporting our allies as new threats continue to rise. For too long we have allowed ourselves to be fooled, to think that war was a thing of the past, that we were too civilized to let that happen again. As we look around at the world in 2025, we see once again, the need for Canadian soliders to defend the rights and the freedoms of people they have never met.”
Niagara is home to Canada’s oldest living second world war veteran.
110-year-old Burd Sisler of Fort Erie was honoured at Queen’s Park last week by Niagara Falls NDP MPP Wayne Gates.
Sisler is a veteran of the Canadian Armed Forces and now lives at Garrison Place in Fort Erie.
