Deadline today for companies interested in building second ferris wheel in Niagara Falls

Today marks the deadline for companies interested in building a second ferris wheel in Niagara Falls.
The Request for Proposals (RFP) for the new, privately-funded observation wheel in Queen Victoria Park closes at the end of today.
The deadline was originally set for May, but was extended by the Niagara Parks Commission.
The province announced its Destination Niagara tourism strategy last year, with the goal of doubling tourism in the city.
That plan includes ideas like the new observation wheel, and more casinos.
Niagara Falls NDP MPP Wayne Gates says no one wants another ferris wheel, especially at Queen Victoria Park.
Gates has started a survey protesting the idea and is planning a townhall.
“We can’t continue to sit back and let Doug Ford put a second ferris wheel in our greenspace without talking to the residents, the workers and the operators first. To suggest that this is not our decision, so we may as well do nothing, makes no sense to me. Niagara Parks oversees a national treasure. But when they are prepared to sign a 50-year lease and pave over public greenspace, and the RFP closes tomorrow, it is clear we still have work to do. So here is my question: if we hold a town hall on this issue, will you come?”
