A driver was arrested for impaired driving during a RIDE spot check conducted Thursday evening in St. Catharines, according to Niagara Regional Police Service.

Officers from the police service’s Traffic Enforcement Unit, along with uniform patrol officers from 1 District (St. Catharines/Thorold), set up the Reduce Impaired Driving Everywhere (RIDE) checkpoint near Welland Avenue and Dieppe Road on March 12.

During the proactive enforcement initiative, officers issued 11 Provincial Offences Notices and handed out five warnings to drivers. Police also required four drivers to provide breath samples using an approved roadside screening device.

One of those drivers registered a “FAIL” reading, resulting in their arrest for impaired operation of a conveyance with a blood alcohol concentration over the legal limit.

Police say impaired driving continues to be the leading criminal offence causing death in Canada, and enforcement programs such as RIDE remain a key strategy in preventing tragedies on the road.

The checkpoint was conducted with support from the Ontario Ministry of the Solicitor General, which provides funding for the Reduce Impaired Driving Everywhere (RIDE) program.

The Niagara Regional Police Service says it will continue to focus on both education and enforcement to reduce impaired driving across the region.
