Police handed out four roadside licence suspensions during impaired driving enforcement over the Easter long weekend.

The Niagara Regional Police Service conducted RIDE spot checks Saturday night in Niagara Falls and St. Catharines as part of its holiday enforcement efforts.

Officers stopped approximately 320 vehicles throughout the night and spoke with drivers about whether they had consumed alcohol or drugs earlier in the evening.

A total of 35 drivers were required to provide a breath sample.

Four drivers registered an “Alert” reading on an approved screening device and each received a seven-day roadside licence suspension.

Police also issued 15 Provincial Offence Notices for various traffic-related offences.

One driver was charged with driving while suspended and had their vehicle impounded for seven days.

Another driver was arrested and charged with breaching a probation order.

Police say impaired driving remains the leading criminal offence causing death in Canada and enforcement initiatives such as RIDE are aimed at reducing those incidents through education and enforcement.
