The federal government has announced a measure to help Canadians dealing with high gas and diesel prices.

The Liberal Party has announced a temporary suspension of the federal excise tax to provide immediate relief at the pump.

The tax break begins on Monday, April 20, 2026, and will remain in place until September 7, 2026 (Labour Day).

Drivers are expected to save 10 cents per litre on regular gasoline and 4 cents per litre on diesel.

The measure is expected to cost approximately $2.4 billion, which the government plans to cover by “recycling” increased tax revenues resulting from high global oil prices.
