A Niagara politician is calling for an end to what he calls ‘legislated poverty’.
Niagara Falls NDP MPP Wayne Gates was joined by representatives from the Ontario Network of Injured Workers Groups (ONIWG) and the Injured Workers Community Legal Clinic today to renew the call for Ontario to end the WSIB practice of deeming.
Gates says deeming allows WSIB to pretend an injured worker can perform a job they don’t have, and that often doesn’t even exist, and then cut their benefits based on imaginary wages.
“Right now, in the richest province in the country, about half of all injured workers are living in poverty, said Gates. These are people injured at work, through no fault of their own, and they’re being punished by a broken WSIB system.”
