A new fire station in Welland has been named after a long-time firefighter.
The Captain Craig C. Bowman Memorial Fire Station on Prince Charles Drive is honouring Craig Bowman.
He died in 2023 from work-related esophageal cancer.
At the time Bowman was advocating for cancer coverage and protections for firefighters.
Fire Chief Matt Richardson says there is a plaque outside the hall outlining Captain Bowman’s story.
The Captain Craig Bowman act reduced the service-time requirement for presumptive coverage of esophageal cancer, and helped establish a national framework for firefighter cancer prevention and treatment.
