Results of a new poll are out looking at how Niagara residents would feel about possible privatization of water services.
The survey was conducted by Research Co. for CUPE Ontario and included opinions from nearly 1000 adults in Niagara from March 28th to April 4th.
CUPE is concerned that a “water for power” proposal by some Niagara mayors and provincial legislation will lead to the privatization of essential water services.
The union argues this shift will prioritize corporate profits over public health, safety, and affordability.
The poll shows 61 per cent of Niagara residents say their local council should resist the new provincial law if the Ford government tries to use it here, and 60 per cent oppose any changes at all.
62 per cent of respondents said they were happy with the quality of the water and wastewater systems already in place.
The poll also asked which political provincial party they would vote for today if there was an election.
28 per cent said they would vote Conservative, 27 per cent said the Liberals and 21 per cent said the NDP.
The poll’s margin of error is +/- 3.2 percentage points, 19 times out of 20.
