Gates welcomes WSIB changes, but says more must be done to protect workers
04/16/2026 at 12:27 PMNiagara Falls NDP MPP Wayne Gates is welcoming the Ontario government’s planned improvements to WSIB benefits, but says more must be done.
Gates says parts of Bill 86, which he co-sponsored, will be adopted into the Ford government’s new legislation updating Workplace Safety and Insurance Board policies.
The Ford government announced this week that it is increasing loss-of-earnings benefits, and extending benefits beyond the age of 65.
“As we modernize worker protections and the government bill moves through the legislature we have a priority. First, we must recognize that too many workers in Ontario are still battling a system that makes life harder after they have already been hurt on the job.” Niagara Falls MPP Wayne Gates.
Gates is urging the province to review and adopt the full Bill 86, which would repeal the Workplace Safety and Insurance Act, 1997 and overhaul Ontario’s worker compensation system.
