After years of advocacy from local leaders and residents, planning for a future GO Transit station in Grimsby has officially moved forward.
Niagara Region, in partnership with Metrolinx, has issued a Notice of Commencement that launches the formal provincial planning process for the proposed Grimsby GO Station.
The notice marks the beginning of a review that will examine the project in detail, gather feedback from the community, and evaluate potential environmental impacts before construction can proceed.
The proposed station is part of ongoing transit expansion along the Lakeshore West line, which runs between Hamilton and Niagara Falls. The broader expansion is expected to bring increased rail service to Niagara Region and improve regional transit connections.
If approved, the Grimsby station would sit between the future Confederation GO Station and the existing St. Catharines GO Station.
The proposed location is south of the Queen Elizabeth Way interchange and west of Casablanca Boulevard in Grimsby.
Plans indicate the station could be delivered in phases and may include several features to support both rail and bus service.
Proposed elements include a GO Train platform, infrastructure needed for rail operations, and a bus loop designed to connect GO Bus service with on-demand transit from Niagara Region Transit. The project could also allow for fixed-route bus connections in the future.
Additional amenities under consideration include customer shelters, fare payment kiosks, digital screens with real-time travel information, and parking areas. Bicycle racks, pedestrian pathways, and designated pick-up and drop-off zones are also part of the potential design.
As part of the provincial planning process, the project team will study environmental impacts related to the station and explore ways to reduce or avoid negative effects. Public consultation will also be included as the review progresses.
Local officials say the proposed station represents a significant step forward for the community.
The Town of Grimsby has long advocated for improved transit access for residents and businesses, with a GO station considered a key priority for the area. Municipal leaders say they will continue working with Niagara Region and Metrolinx as the planning process moves ahead and will provide updates as more information becomes available.
