The number of homeless encampments in St. Catharines has dropped dramatically.
Mayor Mat Siscoe addressed the issue at today’s State of the City event at Club Roma, hosted by the Greater Niagara Chamber of Commerce.
Siscoe says they have gone from having 90 homeless encampments to two, after the city enacted a new public space use bylaw, limiting where they can be set up.
Siscoe hinted that Hoverlink, a proposed high-speed, year-round hovercraft service to Toronto, is expected to announce major milestones this year.
The hovercraft service across Lake Ontario, running out of Port Weller, aims to bypass QEW traffic and take only 30 minutes.
Siscoe spoke about the city’s housing efforts with pride, saying it has become a model for innovative housing efforts across Canada.
He says more than 500 units were approved by the city last year.
