Some Niagara municipalities declining to participate in Pride engagement requests
04/18/2026 at 08:05 AMPride Niagara is celebrating its 16th annual Pride Flag Raising during Niagara Pride week.
Every year, the organization invites all Niagara municipalities to show their allyship to the 2SLGBTQ+ community.
To avoid “performative allyship”, Pride Niagara has outlined requirements for Niagara municipalities to show their true support:
– Participating in a Flag Raising Ceremony on June 1st.
– The Mayor, or a council representative, will take part in the ceremony and share words of support and acknowledgment.
– Local Council will deliver a statement of support during the opening remarks of the first Council meeting in late May or June.
– The Pride flag will be flown for the entirety of Niagara Pride Week June 1st to June 7th, with strong encouragement to fly it for the entire month of June.
– Active engagement at this year’s Niagara UNITY Awards.
According to Pride Niagara, Pelham, Lincoln, West Lincoln, Grimsby, Port Colborne, and St. Catharines have confirmed active participation of these requests.
Thorold, Wainfleet, and Niagara-on-the-Lake will not be participating under these requirements.
Other municipalities are still deciding.
