A 57-year-old St. Catharines man is facing an aggravated assault charge following a stabbing in the city’s downtown early Tuesday morning.

Niagara Regional Police were called to the area of Church Street and William Street around 12:25 a.m. after reports of a stabbing. Officers arrived and found a 23-year-old man suffering from a stab wound.

The victim was taken to an out-of-region hospital, where his injuries were determined to be non life-threatening.

Police set up a perimeter in the downtown core and, with the assistance of K9 units, located and arrested a suspect nearby. David Penner, 57, of St. Catharines, has since been charged with aggravated assault.

Penner remains in custody and is scheduled to appear for a bail hearing later today at the Robert S.K. Welch Courthouse on Church Street.

The Niagara Regional Police 1 District Criminal Investigations Bureau has taken over the case.
