The organizers of a whale sanctuary in Nova Scotia have some good news.

The provincial government granting the group approval to start construction of North America’s first sanctuary.

The Whale Sanctuary Project says they will get a 20-year lease for 83 hectares of Crown lands and coastal waters.

This means they can start building the floating net enclosure.

The goal is for the sanctuary to be home for whales and dolphins retired from theme parks such as Marineland.

The project’s executive director says the proposed 40-hectare enclosure could hold up to 10 of Marineland’s 30 belugas.

He has suggested the refuge could open as early as next year.
